The 2023 Top 100 U.S. list was decided based on the votes ofOutpost Club members. This extremely well-traveled group were given noinstructions about what to consider like “shot values” ormaintenance/conditioning. They were simply asked to rate the course. Coursesneeded at least 15 ratings to be eligible, which unfortunately, meant thatcourses such as CapRock and Scioto (post-renovation) didn’t make the finallist. We’re sure that will change with subsequent iterations of the Top 100.
A little information about the list: New York and Californialead the way with 14 courses each. In all, 29 states are represented in the Top100. Sixty-three courses would beconsidered classic designs (pre-1960). SethRaynor is the architect most represented on the list with 12 designs, followedby A.W. Tillinghast, Donald Ross, and the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshawwith 11 each.
As with any list, there are sure to be criticisms (in fact, a few of the rankings surprised even us), but all-in-all, we are pleased with the list. We hope you enjoy this project.
